What shipping methods do you use?

Please see our Shipping & Handling page for information, including our Warm Weather Shipping policy.

Why do you have a “Warm Weather Shipping” Policy?

Because of the high quality of our chocolates, they are highly susceptible to melting when temperatures exceed 72° Fahrenheit. Due to this fact, we automatically prepare our chocolates for warm weather shipments with expedited freight and cool packaging for all months and destinations that require it. A Warm Weather Shipping Fee is automatically applied May-October to ALL destinations. A Warm Weather Shipping Fee is automatically applied year-round for delivery to: California (southern), Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, and Florida. Warm Weather Shipments are packed inside a protective, insulated container with ice-packs. The fee for the additional packaging is $10. This special packaging will protect your shipment and keep it cool up to 48-hours only. Therefore, packages must be shipped to arrive within 1-3 days. Depending on how far the destination is from our Pittsburgh PA factory will determine the method of shipping required, i.e., ground, or 2 Day Air. Packages should not be left outside in the elements. Please contact recipient to let them know to expect the package.

What is a “Cordial Strawberry”?

The confection we sell are “Cordial Strawberries” as opposed to chocolate-covered strawberries. The difference: One has a liquid center and the other is a fresh strawberry dipped in chocolate. To make cordial strawberries we start by dipping fruit into thick liquid fondant. The fondant coats the fruit and forms a shell around it. It is then chocolate coated up to three times. Each time a layer is formed over the previous one it becomes larger. By the final coat the finished product becomes much larger than when began. In a short period of time the natural sugar in the berry combines with the fondant and is transformed into the sweet strawberry cordial. As this occurs it reduces the size of the berry. When all of the berry’s sugar is spent only the pulp of the fruit remains. Often strawberries are extremely large and if whole berry were used they could become the size of a softball when finished. Unfortunately, it is impossible to buy strawberries that are a consistently smaller size. Therefore, large berries must be cut into smaller pieces with only a piece being used. When cut the cordial process can occur more quickly with open fruit exposed to the fondant. The product will appear more like fresh strawberries when fruit is small enough and a whole berry is used and only a slight amount of time has passed before the transformation into cordial. The closer the product is to the best buy date the more the process will shrink the fruit. Although the size of the berry may not always look as expected, we continue to use only the finest ingredients to make the taste consistently delicious.

What is the best way to store my chocolates?

Chocolates are recommended to be stored in a cool dry place where temperatures are 65 degrees and humidity is 50% or less. They should be kept away from strong odors. They are NOT recommended to be stored in refrigerators because humidity is high and may absorb unpleasant odors.

Can chocolates be stored in the freezer?

Yes, but they should be carefully wrapped in airtight wrapping or container. We recommend to first wrap in plastic wrap and then wrap with aluminum foil to prevent freezer burn.

How long will your chocolates stay fresh?

Chocolates should be fresh at least until the best buy date marked on the package. Usually this can be anywhere from 6-months to 1-year from date of manufacture. It is important to note chocolates are delicate and the conditions in which they are kept will have a significant impact on how long they remain fresh. For example, if left unwrapped and exposed to warm temperatures freshness can deteriorate within hours. (See: “What is the best way to store my chocolates?”)
